Trump ally asked to resign from school board over insults

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A co-chairman of Republican Donald Trump's New York presidential campaign who publicly insulted Democratic President Barack Obama and his wife has been asked to resign from a local school board. Millionaire developer Carl Paladino told a Buffalo alternative newspaper last week he wanted to see Obama dead of mad cow disease and Michelle Obama living with a gorilla in Africa. He now says the comments weren't meant for publication but were nevertheless "inappropriate." At a special meeting on Thursday the Buffalo school board voted 6-2 to ask the state education commissioner to remove Paladino if he doesn't resign within 24 hours. Paladino didn't attend the meeting. He says he won't resign.

Stock market rebounds as investors net N468bn in 3 weeks

These effectively trimmed the year-to-date loss in the stock market to -6.8 per cent compared to -11.55 per cent recorded three weeks ago. Capital market operators attributed these positive development to portfolio realignment by bargain hunters who are investing in cheap stocks and those who are taking position to benefit from companies that usually declared dividend early in the year. Moreover, they stated that the surge recently seen in oil prices as a result of the decision by member countries of Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, to peg output, is also impacting the market in the right direction. They noted that this positive sentiment might continue into next year, especially with the 2017 expansionary budget presented by President Muhammadu Buhari last week. Week-to-date performance On week-to-week basis, the ASI and market capitalisation rose by 3.44 per cent driven by interest in oil and gas company, Seplat Development Company Plc, which rose by 20.6 per cent, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc that returned 9.3 per cent and Dangote Cement Plc, which rose by 6.3 per cent as oil prices rallied above $50.00/b during the week. Activity level also improved as average volume and value traded rose 131.4 per cent and 47.9 per cent to 414.1 million units and N3.1 billion. According to the NSE, a turnover of 639.439 million shares worth N6.455 billion in 11,799 deals were traded this week by investors on the floor of the Exchange in contrast to a total of 823.547 million shares valued at N5.444 billion that exchanged hands last week in 11,634 deals. The Financial Services Industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 491.758 million shares valued at N2.211 billion traded in 6,241 deals; thus contributing 76.90% and 34.25% to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively. The Conglomerates Industry followed with 64.507 million shares worth N58.500 million in 681 deals. The third place was occupied by the Consumer Goods Industry with a turnover of 54.901 million shares worth N3.307 billion in 2,386 deals. Similar to the previous week, performance across sectors was mixed with the oil and gas index appreciating the most, recording 7.4 per cent increase on account of renewed buy sentiment in Seplat (+20.6 per cent) and Forte Oil Plc (+9.4 per cent). The banking index trailed by 6.3 per cent, driven by gains in Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, ETI Plc that recorded +21.1 per cent return and GTB, (+9.3 per cent). Similarly, the industrial goods sector added 3.5 per cent as a result of upsurge in Dangote Cement (+6.3 per cent) and Cement Company of Northern Nigeria, CCNN (+5.0 per cent). On the flip side, declines in Nigerian Breweries Plc, which fell by 2.1 per cent and Unilever Nigeria Plc that declined by 12.1 per cent dragged the consumer goods sector down by 1.7 per cent, while the insurance sector dipped by 0.5 per cent against the backdrop of losses in Mansard Insurance, 4.1 per cent and Wapic insurance which dropped by 2.0 per cent. Operators comment Reacting, Alhaji Ola Yussuff, Managing Director/CEO, Trust Yield Securities, explained that the market is not one directional but cyclical. He noted that one of the reasons why the market plummeted earlier in the year was because the country was not selling enough oil. “When the market went down, one of the reasons was that Nigeria was not selling enough oil. The price of oil was going down and Nigeria was not selling enough; now when it started going up, most of the oil stocks started going up. If oil price was at N35 and it now moved up to over N50, that has changed the invoicing of some of the oil marketers, and if that has changed their invoicing, it also changed the invoicing of the banks that were financing them. “Most of the banks that we noted earlier that were in trouble was because of their exposure to oil and gas. So, if there is improvement in oil and gas or prospect of improvement, then there will be prospect of improvement in banking and that is what we have been seeing. Read more at:

Matteo Renzi's referendum defeat risks Italy political crisis

Italian PM Matteo Renzi's referendum defeat on Sunday has left Italy facing political and economic uncertainty. Mr Renzi announced he was stepping down after his constitution reform plan was rejected by voters. He met President Sergio Mattarella and will offer him his resignation later. Mr Mattarella must decide whether to appoint a new PM or hold elections. There are concerns the instability may trigger a deeper crisis for Italy's already vulnerable banking sector. A consortium organising a possible bailout for one leading bank, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, is meeting on Monday to consider whether to pursue the rescue bid.

Who is Afraid of Atiku Abubakar?

The choice Nigerians need to make in 2019 One politician strolled into the fourth republic with huge dose of democratic credentials. Alhaji Abubakar Atiku established himself as a democrat immediately he resigned from public service. He became a disciple of late Gen. Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, the great political tactician that swept the country like a hurricane. Members of this political machine included Chief Anthony Anenih, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lamidi Adedibu, Dapo Sarumi, Yomi Edu and others. Turaki Abubakar was at the verge of winning the governorship election of Adamawa State in 1991 before former military President Ibrahim Babangida banned him and other frontline candidates across the afraid-atiku-abubakar/ot deterred by the setback, he contested the presidential primary election of the Social Democratic Party and placed third out 30 contestants. Who is afraid of Atiku and why are they afraid of him? In understanding who and why they are afraid of Atiku, we need to analyse the politics of the fourth republic and properly situate his role(s) in proper context. It is worthy to mention that he was a founding member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party and actually contributed N500m to the party. It is obvious that he had already conquered the business world before assuming office as Vice President. In modern Nigeria, I have not seen a politician more tenacious that the Turaki Adamawa in defending his beliefs and projecting same for the benefit of humanity. Anybody in doubt should take a trip to the hill top of Abeokuta and debrief former Olusegun Obasanjo. He masked his intention on a third term agenda hinged on the need for policy continuity. He did not reckon with the tenacity of Atiku to rally positive forces of the political class to checkmate him. The political fallout on the Turaki was massive. Obasanjo unleashed the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) led by Nuhu Ribadu on him. Lies were churned out and international conspiracy was activated to damage the skyrocketing political profile of the former Vice President. However, his doggedness and commitment to the creation of an ideal Nigerian society kept him going. Today, he has emerged as the leading light in the remodelling of our nation. In moving Nigeria to political stability, tolerance and developmental Eldorado, what is needed is a thoroughbred politician imbued with economic foresight and ability to create jobs for the youth population. The youths have become despondent and feel left behind by the political and economic train. A tested hand like Atiku is surely needed to coordinate the proper integration of the youths into the economic mainstream. He is the highest individual employer of labour in Nigeria and a believer in excellence. The truth that cannot be dismissed is that among those jostling to convince Nigerians for their votes in 2019, only the Turaki has experience in job creation. This is the choice Nigerian must make in 2019 without sentiment and pandering to the propaganda of surrogates of past failures. The fragility of our mutual existence as a country cannot be over exaggerated. As a matter of fact, the erosion of our cultural, religious and social commonalities is an ever constant feature of the past two decades. There is need to undertake enormous reintegration of all divergent groups into a united country. Nobody can do it better than Atiku. He is a proven man of immense conviction and political muscles to navigate us to the destination of unity. President Muhammadu Buhari came at a time he was needed to abridge our drift towards excessive insecurity and anarchy. Atiku is the man to build the country for the happiness and prosperity of all citizens of Nigeria. Read more at:

ONDO ELECTION, 2019 AND THE BATTLE WITHIN APC : Pro-Buhari elements Vs Tinubu’s men Read more at:

Akure Though peaceful, last weekend’s governorship election in Ondo State was seen by many observers as a ‘bazaar’ in which the highest bidder got the lion share of the votes. But, whereas all the major political parties allegedly took part in the undemocratic game, the way the All Progressives Congress (APC) allegedly went on spending spree put to question the anti-corruption crusade of the ruling government at the federal level. No fewer than six governors of the APC whose states’ civil servants are owed salaries for several months were said to be part of the ‘bazaar’ staged in the name of election. They were allegedly led to Ondo by the Chairman of the party’s Governors Forum, Rochas Okorocha, who is the Imo State governor and a former governor of Ekiti State but now Solid Minerals Minister, Dr Kayode Fayemi. Oyegun, Tinubu and Buhari Security operatives and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were believed to be part of the alleged voters inducement as they pretended that nothing of such was going on. They looked the other way after they had allegedly been taken care off. It was an inducement allegedly done with impunity by all the political parties. Meanwhile, the alleged voters’ inducement was done in flagrant disobedience of the police authorities threat before the election that nobody should come to the polling units with more than N5,000 as such people would be arrested. Cash-for-vote But supporters of the various parties allegedly stormed polling units across the state with millions of naira to trade in “ see and buy”, otherwise known as cash-for-vote. It was learnt that between N500,000 and N1m was sent to each of the 3,009units across Ondo by one of the major parties to induce voters while other parties sent far less. This was aside the distribution of clothing materials- Ankara- rice, salt, noodles, sugar and other consumable goods to voters by political parties. The desperation of one of the major parties to “capture” the state became so evident in the moves by some top government officials to frustrate the chances of two of the leading governorship candidates in the poll: PDP’s Eyitayo Jegede and AD’s Olusoke Oke, who was believed to have been schemed out of the primary of the APC which produced Mr Rotimi Akeredolu as the candidate. Oke moved to Alliance for Democracy (AD) allegedly with the backing of a National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, but the top government officials still pursued him and tried to frustrate him because of his backer who reportedly wanted to use him to slight them for allegedly imposing Akeredolu as the APC candidate in the Ondo poll against his preferred candidate, Dr Olusegun Abraham. Oke survived the moves after the National Executive Committee (NEC) of AD cleared him and gave him a waiver to contest the poll. The top government officials were said to have worked on the premises that with Oke and Akeredolu in the race, the federal might would be deployed to muscle the AD candidate, hence they let him go but with the popularity and acceptance of Jegede, they knew that allowing the PDP candidate to contest could spell doom for Akeredolu following which they shut him out until 24 hours to the election and all appeal, by stakeholders for a shift in the date of the poll to allow Jegede a level-playing ground, as provided by the Electoral Act were rebuffed by INEC which the PDP and Governor Olusegun Mimiko alleged had compromised the election even before it was conducted. While Oke left the APC over the alleged injustice done to him by the party leadership which allegedly imposed Akeredolu despite the criticism that trailed the party’s primary election, Jegede was made to abandon his campaign for weeks to run after an impostor, Mr Jimoh Ibrahim, who laid claim to his mandate. It was later alleged that Jimoh Ibrahim was an instrument being used by some top government officials at the federal level to level the hurdles that could prevent Akeredolu from winning the November 26 election. Separately, the election, according to Sunday Vanguard findings, was not only about Akeredolu, Jegede or Oke but also about the capture of the South-West by the foot soldiers of President Muhammad Buhari ahead of the 2019 elections when the President will be due to run for second term. Their target is said to be Tinubu whose grip and influence in the region was believed to be making some top appointees of Buhari uncomfortable and that if the 2019 project would scale through, the APC National Leader needed to be “cut to size”. Now that Ondo has been “captured” using alleged cash-for-votes, the next target of the forces allegedly trying to upstage Tinubu in the South-West to pave the way for the re-election of Buhari in 2019 is said to be Ekiti where the governorship election will hold in 2018. Sources said after Ekiti, the train is heading to Osun where although a loyalist of Tinubu, Rauf Aregbesola, is governor, Tinubu may also be stopped from installing an associate as Aregbesola’s successor in the election also due to hold in 2018. It was gathered that the capture” Ondo by the Presidency group was systematically planned and executed. No love lost If Akeredolu had failed to win the election, the people’s confidence in the administration of Buhari and the APC might have been greatly eroded and the 2019 project crumbled like a pack of caracard.

Borno can debunks alleged marginalization in reconstruction of destroyed churches Read more at:

Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno State chapter, Bishop Mohammed Naga, has debunked allegations that many christian communities have been marginalized in the on-going reconstruction work of destroyed churches by government of Governor Kashim Shettima. Briefing newsmen in his office, CAN centre, Maiduguri, at the week end, the Bishop, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Committee set up by the governor to reconstruct destroyed churches due to activities of Boko Haram in southern senatorial district of the state, said, none of the christian communities will be marginalized in the reconstruction effort as claimed by some groups in Damboa Local Government Area. Earlier, Brother Simon Ularju who is Chairman of Christian Forum in Damboa, who led other members on a courtesy call on the CAN Chairman recently alleged that, “communities of Kopchi, Izgeki, Kauji, Bdagu, Yazza, Shawa, Kuburvu, Kwanjilari and other villages on the fringes of Sambisa forest, whose churches were all razed including their residential houses were denied their rights by the committee to be enlisted in the reconstruction effort”. But Naga said, Governor Kashim Shettima is committed to the plights of Christians in the state, hence the setting up of a high powered committee to reconstruct all destroyed churches across the state, which, according to him, will be done in phases as the security situation improved.

House of Reps seeks 90% implementation of NIMASA’s budget

House of Representatives Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration has resolved to support the rebuilding efforts of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in its quest to reposition, reform and restructure the agency for the benefit of the nation’s economy. The committee challenged NIMASA’s management on 90 percent implementation of its budget, calling on the management to spend funds appropriated to it, according to the provisions of the law, so that the value of the projects can be realised. The Chairman of the Committee, Mohammed Umar Bago said this when he led other members of his committee on oversight visit to the agency, assuring the unflinching support of members to enable the agency deliver on its mandate, in ensuring the growth of the maritime sector, especially now that the economy is in a recession. The Committee Chairman called on the management to see their visit as a wakeup call, noting that “in the 8th Assembly, the legislative agenda is the same. “All of us apply the same approach now in trying to bring out the best in our parastatals. We should not be seen as vindictive or punitive but as partners in progress”, he said. In his remakrs, the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside assured the Committee of the agency’s readiness to cooperate with it in the interest of the maritime industry and the country as a whole. “When you are given an assignment, you are expected to be accountable. You are expected to conduct the assignment in a transparent manner. The oversight function is part of accountability. The National Assembly appropriates for us, so we are expected to be accountable. And so we have given account of our stewardship”, he said. The NIMASA’s boss assured the Committee that there would be a significant improvement in the operations of the agency, even as he welcomed the call for a synergy between the executive and legislative arms of government for the benefit of Nigerians. He said, “The beauty of democracy is collaboration, synergy between the executive and the legislative arms of government. We are all working for a single purpose to help Nigerians. We are working to help the people to ensure that life is better for all. No single arm of government can do it alone, we must work in a collaborative manner”.

EU gets tough: Bloc tells UK Brexit is lose-lose situation

LONDON (AP) — Since Britain voted to leave the European Union, U.K. officials have had one message: Brexit means Brexit. Now they have EU leaders' reply: And it's going to hurt. The prime minister of Malta, whose country is about to assume the EU presidency, is the latest leader to dash Britain's hopes of an easy divorce, signaling that the 27 other nations will drive a hard bargain. Joseph Muscat told the BBC that "there will not be a situation when the U.K. has a better deal than it has today." "In the U.K. it's fair game to bash Brussels and then you don't need to be surprised that in Brussels they bash you back," Muscat said in an interview broadcast Friday. "So this is a bit of Catch-22. It won't be a case whether one side gains and the other side loses. We are all going to lose something." Malta, a former British colony, is usually one of the U.K.'s strongest supporters in Europe. The island nation is due to hold the EU's rotating presidency for six months from Jan. 1 — a period that could coincide with the start of U.K. exit negotiations. British Prime Minister Theresa May says she will trigger Article 50 of the EU's key treaty, beginning two years of exit talks, by March 31. She and her ministers have refused to set out in advance the type of deal Britain will seek, saying that would undermine their bargaining position. In the meantime, EU leaders have grown increasingly firm in their insistence that Britain won't get an easy ride, and frustrated with U.K. vagueness about its plans. Last week, Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem — who heads the group of 19 countries who use the common euro currency — accused British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson of "saying things that are intellectually impossible, politically unavailable." In particular, he referred to suggestions by Johnson and others that Britain might be able to stay in the EU's single market for goods and services while imposing limits on immigration from the bloc. Free movement of workers is a key EU principle, but many Britons who voted to leave the EU are insistent the U.K. take control of immigration. Muscat dismissed the idea that Britain could have both single-market membership and movement restrictions. "And I could in theory win the 100 meters Olympic race," he said. "It's just not happening." Muscat's exasperated tone echoes the frustration voiced by other EU politicians. U.K. Brexit Secretary David Davis visited the European Parliament in Strasbourg this week to meet EU negotiators, and characterized the trip as a chance to get "to know each other and get to trust each other." But Manfred Weber, the German caucus leader of the parliament's main conservative group, said he came out of the meeting thinking Britain had "no idea what Brexit really means." Others have made similar claims. A report from accountancy firm Deloitte that was leaked last week claimed that splits within May's government have delayed development of a negotiating strategy with the EU. The government is divided between Brexit-backers like Johnson and others, including May and Treasury chief Philip Hammond, who campaigned for Britain to remain in the EU. The uncertainty is raising the political temperature in Britain. Two former prime ministers, John Major and Tony Blair, have said there could be a new referendum on Britain's exit — comments that drew angry responses from pro-Brexit politicians. "You can't claim democracy when you want it and reject it when you don't," said former Conservative Cabinet minister Iain Duncan Smith. "We had a vote, that vote now has to be acted on, that's all." Muscat said he would not be surprised if Britain failed to meet its self-imposed March 31 deadline. It is challenging a court ruling that lawmakers in Parliament must get a vote before Article 50 is triggered. The case is due to be heard by the Supreme Court in December, with a judgment likely early next year. Once talks do start, EU officials have suggested it could take two years just to negotiate the terms of Britain's withdrawal, with details of the new relationship hammered out during a transition period. Muscat suggested a deal between Britain and the bloc could even be "scuttled at the very end of the process" by a veto in the European Parliament. A European Parliament election is scheduled for May 2019, meaning lawmakers could be voting on Brexit while facing pressure to please voters at home. Whatever happens, Muscat predicted: "It will get complicated." "Divorces are never easy," he said.

Report: Russian propaganda effort spread fake news

NEW YORK (AP) — A new report suggests a "sophisticated" Russian propaganda campaign helped flood social media with fake news stories leading up to the presidential election. The Washington Post, citing a yet-to-be published report from independent researchers, said the goal was to punish Hillary Clinton, help Donald Trump, and undermine faith in American democracy. The report comes from a nonpartisan group of researchers called PropOrNot. The group describes itself as "concerned American citizens" with expertise in computer science, national security and public policy. The researchers say they traced the origins of posts and mapped the connections among accounts that delivered similar messages. The findings show just how effective the bogus reports and propaganda were, according to the report. On Facebook, PropOrNot estimates that stories planted or promoted by the disinformation campaign were viewed 213 million times. While it's not clear whether fake news and propaganda helped sway the election in Trump's favor, millions of Americans get their news from what's shared on Facebook and other social media. In recent months, fake and misleading stories have proliferated, even as Facebook has insisted that they make up a tiny fraction of the overall stuff users share on the site. Both Facebook and Google have said they are taking steps to stop the spread of misinformation on their sites, including by turning off access to advertising. PropOrNot's report, provided to The Post in advance of its public release, identified more than 200 websites as "peddlers of Russian propaganda during the election season, with combined audiences of at least 15 million Americans." PropOrNot did immediately not respond to a message asking for the report on Friday afternoon

For some in middle class, Trump plan would mean tax increase

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump's proposals would modestly cut income taxes for most middle-class Americans. But for nearly 8 million families — including a majority of single-parent households — the opposite would occur: They'd pay more. Most married couples with three or more children would also pay higher taxes, an analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found. And while middle-class families as a whole would receive tax cuts of about 2 percent, they'd be dwarfed by the windfalls averaging 13.5 percent for America's richest 1 percent. Trump's campaign rhetoric had promoted the benefits of his proposals for middle-income Americans. "The largest tax reductions are for the middle class," said Trump's "Contract With the American Voter," released last month. The tax hikes that would hit single parents and large families would result from Trump's plan to eliminate the personal exemption and the head-of-household filing status. These features of the tax code have enabled many Americans to reduce their taxable income. His other proposed tax changes would benefit middle- and lower-income Americans. But they wouldn't be enough to offset those modifications. "If you're a low- or moderate-income single parent, you're going to get hurt," said Bob Williams, a fellow at the Tax Policy Center. Unlike Trump's polarizing proposals on immigration and trade, his tax plan is in line with traditional Republican policy. His steep tax cuts in many ways resemble those carried out by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, and the Republican-run Congress is expected to welcome them. During the campaign, Trump said his tax cuts — for individuals and companies — would energize the economy by boosting business investment in factories and equipment, while leaving consumers with more cash to spend. His proposals, he contended, would help create 25 million jobs over the next decade. But Lily Batchelder, a visiting fellow at the Tax Policy Center and former deputy director of President Barack Obama's National Economic Council, estimates that roughly 7.9 million families with children would pay higher taxes under his proposals. About 5.8 million are led by single parents. An additional 2.1 million are married couples. Other analysts, including economists at the conservative Tax Foundation and right-of-center American Enterprise Institute, have agreed with Batchelder's conclusions. Here's what her analysis finds: Right now, a single parent with $75,000 in income and two children can claim a head of household deduction of $9,300, plus three personal exemptions. Those steps would reduce the household's taxable income by $21,450, to $53,550. Trump's plan would more than double the standard deduction to $15,000. But that change would be outweighed by his elimination of personal exemptions and head-of-household status. So the family's taxable income would be $60,000, and their tax bill would be $2,440 more than it is now. A married couple with four children and income of $50,000 would absorb a tax increase of $1,090 because of their loss of personal exemptions. Kelly Rodriguez, 47, who lives in Tampa, Florida, voted for Trump and is a single mother who claims two of her four children as dependents. (Her ex-husband claims the other two.) She made roughly $90,000 last year, including alimony payments. Her taxes would likely rise under Trump's plan, according to Batchelder's analysis. "I would want him to explain that to me," she said. "Taxes have to make sense to the people paying them." Still, Trump's plan will likely evolve during congressional negotiations before it becomes law. "This is not anywhere close to a final plan," Williams said. Kyle Pomerlau, director of federal projects at the conservative Tax Foundation, noted that House Speaker Paul Ryan's own tax-cut proposal is similar to Trump's but wouldn't raise taxes on single-parent families. In theory, the two plans could be melded, and Trump's elimination of the head of household status could be dropped. But leaving the head of household filing status and personal exemptions intact would lower tax revenue by $2.1 trillion over the next decade, the Tax Policy Center says. Trump's advisers deny that he will raise taxes on middle-income Americans but don't provide details. Previously, the campaign suggested that Trump would broadly instruct Congress to avoid raising taxes on lower- and middle-income workers. "We will cut taxes massively for the middle class and working class and protect everyone in the middle class and working class," Stephen Miller, Trump's top policy adviser, said in an email. Yet all independent analyses show most of the benefit flowing to the wealthiest Americans. Nearly half of Trump's tax cuts would go to the top 1 percent of earners, the Tax Policy Center found. Less than a quarter of the cuts would benefit the bottom 80 percent. Trump proposes to reduce the number of tax brackets from seven to three, with rates of 12 percent, 25 percent and 33 percent. That would slash the top rate from the current 39.6 percent. He would repeal the estate tax, which affects only about 0.2 percent of estates — those worth above $5.45 million. For middle-income earners as a whole, the Trump proposals would cut taxes, even taking into account the increases on single-parent families. Those earning nearly $50,000 to about $83,000 — the middle one-fifth — would receive an average cut of $1,010, according to the Tax Policy Center. That would lift their after-tax incomes 1.8 percent. By contrast, the wealthiest 1 percent — those earning over $700,000 — would enjoy a tax cut averaging nearly $215,000, boosting their after-tax incomes 13.5 percent. And the richest 0.1 percent — those making above $3.7 million — would receive a bonanza: An average tax cut exceeding $1 million. "Trump's campaign rhetoric may have been populist, but his tax plan isn't," Howard Gleckman, a senior fellow at the policy center, wrote on its website. His tax proposals suggest what may be a challenge for Trump's administration: Providing his middle- and working-class supporters with tangible signs of economic progress. Middle-income Americans already pay a relatively modest share of federal income taxes compared with the wealthy. That limits the scope of what tax cuts could do for them. "The thing that he needs to worry about is making life better for his supporters, and that involves more than tax cuts," Williams said. Middle class finances have also been squeezed by high and rising costs for health care, higher education and housing, noted Joseph Cohen, a sociologist at Queens College in New York City. "We've been cutting taxes since Reagan, and things have been getting worse for the middle class since Reagan," he said.

Trump Wins Michigan With 10,704 Votes

It’s been more than two weeks since the 2016 presidential election, but the final results from Michigan are in: Donald Trump won by 10,704 votes. It’s the first time a Republican candidate won the state since George H. W. Bush in 1988. While former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton won the popular vote with more than 2 million submissions, the race in Michigan was tight. By winning the state’s 16 Electoral College votes, Trump’s total increased to 306. Clinton’s is 232. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win. The results were posted by Ruth Johnson, Michigan’s Secretary of State, Wednesday after all the votes were reviewed and certified by Michigan’s 83 county clerks Tuesday. “Many people have asked about Michigan’s process for counting ballots and certifying election results. Please be aware that all 1,521 Michigan cities and townships completed ballot counting and reported unofficial results by the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 9,” a statement on Johnson’s website reads. “The county canvassing boards, as they do after every election, then began their work to review and certify the results from each precinct.” Here’s how the total votes for Michigan breaks down: Donald J. Trump, Republican: 2,279,543 Hillary Clinton, Democratic: 2,268,839 Gary Johnson, Libertarian: 172,136 Jill Stein, Green: 51,463 Darrell L. Castle, U.S. Taxpayers: 16,139 Evan McMullin, write-in: 8,177 Emidio Mimi Soltysik, Natural Law: 2,209 Michael Maturen, write-in: 517 Tom Hoefling, write-in: 95 Laurence Kotlikoff, write-in: 87 Ben Hartnell, write-in: 39 Monica Moorehead, write-in: 30 Cherunda Fox, write-in: 10 Wisconsin and Pennsylvania have not solidified their votes. Former Green Party candidate Jill Stein is demanding a recount. She raised nearly $5 million, with the goal of $7 million. Her page states “we cannot guarantee a recount will happen in any of these states we are targeting. We can only pledge we will demand recounts in those states” and that “if we raise more than what’s needed, the surplus will also go toward election integrity efforts and to promote voting system reform.” Clinton, however, has already conceded. “I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans,” Clinton, 69, said Nov. 9 about President-elect Trump, 70. “This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, and I’m sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country.”

Ibrahimovic eyeing ‘conquering’ US

Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic said Tuesday he was eyeing the possibility of a move to the the United States.

“I can see myself conquering the US, just as I have (conquered) Europe,” the 35-year-old Swede told daily newspaper Aftonbladet in an interview.

“People stay in one place throughout their entire career, but I have travelled around like Napoleon in Europe and conquered every country I’ve arrived in,” Ibrahimovic said.

“So maybe I could cross the Atlantic and conquer the US as well,” he said after winning the Swedish Golden Ball award for the 11th time on Monday.

In honour of the country’s most prolific goal-scorer, the Swedish football association announced that a statue of Ibrahimovic would be erected at the Friends arena in Stockholm within one year.

Acknowledging that United is not in as strong a position as his former team Paris Saint-Germain, Ibrahimovic said he’s trying to deliver the same results.

“I had it good at PSG; it’s no secret. We had a strong and good team that got better and better every year,” he said.

“But that’s passed now… This is a new chapter now and I’m trying to create the same feeling here,” Ibrahimovic said, referring to United.

Noting that United coach Jose Mourinho was one of the reasons he decided to join the Premier League team, Ibrahimovic said: “I checked the team (United) a little bit before I came and it wasn’t like the team I came from.”

“This is something I was prepared for… the team is not the same as (PSG),” the superstar said.

“But after speaking with Mourinho, it wasn’t a difficult decision. If he calls then I have no problems showing up,” Ibrahimovic added.

After a dismal showing at Euro-2016, Sweden’s all-time high scorer in June put an end to his 116-cap international career, in which he scored 62 goals.

CNN’s Jeff Zucker, TV News Anchors Face ‘Firing Squad’ in ‘Unprecedented’ Meeting With Donald Trump

In a Monday meeting at New York’s Trump Tower that Donald Trump spokeswoman called “unprecedented,” the president-elect tore into top broadcast and cable news executives and on-air talent as representatives of the “dishonest” media, the New York Post reported. Trump specifically named CNN president Jeff Zucker in the off-the-record meeting, according to the Post, which described the atmosphere as like a “firing squad” by the real estate mogul turned reality TV host turned politician. Representatives for Trump and CNN did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s requests for comment. The president-elect’s off-the-record confab with suits and anchors from ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CNN lasted a little over an hour and attendees didn’t answer questions on the way out. Also Read: Sean Hannity Defends Against Megyn Kelly Accusation That Pro-Trump TV Hosts Faked Credibility Conway, who was Trump’s campaign manager and now serves as a senior adviser, organized the meeting in only two days. “Excellent meetings with the top executives of the major networks … Pretty unprecedented meeting we put together in two days,” Conway said, according to Business Insider. George Stephanopoulos, Martha Raddatz and Davis Muir represented ABC; Charlie Rose, John Dickerson, Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King represented CBS; Jeff Zucker, Wolf Blitzer and Erin Burnett represented CNN; and Deborah Turness, Lester Holt, Chuck Todd and Phil Griffin represented NBC News/MSNBC, according to Bloomberg. Fox News didn’t send any anchors, but executives Bill Shine, Jack Abernethy, Jay Wallace and Suzanne Scott were in attendance. The meeting came less than a week after Trump ditched his press pool to take his family to dinner, which sparked outrage among journalists who typically sent a small pool to follow presidents and presidents-elect in any public setting. Trump’s team and the attendees made “real progress” when it comes to transparency, according to CNN, which cited a source in the room.

How Christie lost his spot on the Trump transition team

Something was bothering Donald Trump as he made his victory speech after the election. The newly minted president-elect took the stage with at least 40 of his closest aides and allies, but according to a high-level campaign source familiar with Trump’s thinking, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie kept pushing to be near the president-elect and “trying to get in shots.” Trump got annoyed,” the source told Yahoo News. The election night photo incident was one of several factors Trump insiders cited to explain why Christie was demoted from his position as transition team chair and replaced by Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Nov. 11. Contrary to some press reports, Christie’s downfall wasn’t the result of friction with Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, campaign sources said. Instead, Trump thought Christie was mishandling the transition, and he had “growing concerns” about the governor’s role in the Bridgegate scandal, in which two of Christie’s close aides were convicted of conspiracy on Nov. 4. During the trial, witnesses testified that Christie was aware of the planning of the scheme. Although the governor has steadfastly denied any role in the plan to tie up traffic in Fort Lee, N.J., to punish its mayor, when the verdict was announced, a pair of campaign appearances Christie was set to make for Trump were abruptly canceled. “There were just some things that were not handled appropriately or done to a level of satisfaction and professionalism,” the high-level source said of the transition team under Christie. This account was confirmed by two other Trump campaign sources, but those close to Christie disputed it. One Christie ally suggested the transition only got off to a turbulent start because Trump and his campaign team didn’t expect to win the race anddidn’t engage with the transition process prior to his surprise victory. Christie stands on stage along with President-elect Trump's campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway and Trump campaign CEO Stephen Bannon. (Photo: Mark Wilson/Getty Images) New Jersey Gov. Christie, center, onstage with President-elect Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, right, and Trump campaign CEO Stephen Bannon, far right. (Photo: Mark Wilson/Getty Images) Yahoo News reached out to Christie’s office for a comment on this story. The governor’s office referred us to Trump spokesman Jason Miller, who did not respond. We also tried to contact Christie directly, but he did not respond to requests for comment. However, a source close to Christie refuted the idea that the transition effort was mismanaged during his tenure. The source described the team under Christie as a “very professional organization.” “I can’t tell you whether or not Trump was frustrated or not, but tons of good work was done by the transition team before the election. Hundreds of people were suggested and vetted for tier one appointments. Hundreds of people were identified for landing teams [for liaison with government agencies]. There were serious implementation plans written for over a dozen major policy initiatives that were put forward on the campaign trail,” the source close to Christie said. The Christie source said there was nothing unusual in Trump’s replacing Christie with Pence. “It is natural that the president-elect would want the vice president to take a major role, and that the campaign team would become the major players in the transition,” a source close to Christie said. A second source close to Christie echoed the notion that it was “entirely natural” for Pence to take over. They also pointed out there was historical precedent for this, since then Vice President Dick Cheney took over former President George W. Bush’s transition team from other aides after they won the presidential election in 2000. “It is entirely natural for there to be a transition in the transition as it moves from planning to execution phases,” said the Christie source. However, in addition to the three Trump campaign sources who spoke to Yahoo News, two junior staffers also described specific instances of alleged mismanagement by Christie that got the transition off to a slow start. The two staffers said Christie did alarmingly little work on the transition and was largely absent from the campaign during the weeks leading up to the election, when Trump was widely expected to lose. According to one account, campaign staffers had been so accustomed to Christie’s absence that they were surprised to see him appear at campaign headquarters in Trump Tower — on Election Day. “Where was Christie? Where was he? He certainly wasn’t planning the transition. We [didn’t] have nearly as much planning as we should have,” one of the staffers said. On election night, the high-level source and the two staffers said many members of Trump’s team did not know where they were supposed to go the next morning. The high-level campaign source described this as one of many examples of a lack of transition planning from Christie. “There wasn’t any coordination,” the source said. “There were just like a lot of things where people were like, ‘Oh yeah, we never really called about that or we never took care of this.’ There’s a lot of basic, basic things that now are getting discovered where it’s just like how did that never get done?” The second source close to Christie said it was “completely not the case” that the governor was not actively working on the transition team. They claimed Christie had “weekly meetings” in Washington with transition staff and “outside parties,” transitions meetings on an “almost weekly basis” with team members in New Jersey, and “almost weekly” meetings with senior campaign leadership at Trump Tower in New York City. The Christie source said the governor was working on the transition on a “daily basis during the entire period from May when he was tapped until last week.” And a third Christie ally said that if there was any confusion, it was because the Trump campaign had not “focused” on transition plans since they “didn’t think they were going to win.” The Christie ally also said “Trump didn’t participate” in transition planning prior to his upset victory. “Nobody focused on it. I don’t know what campaign people would have any knowledge of it because, up until Election Day, the campaign didn’t have any interaction with the transition because … they were busy doing the campaign and they didn’t think they were going to win,” the Christie ally said, adding, “Trump has said he didn’t want anything to do with the transition because he’s superstitious.” But the Trump advisers also presented specific examples of the transition process that the president-elect was dissatisfied with. As one, the high-level source said Trump and Kushner were surprised to learn how many positions they would have to fill in the White House, when they visited Washington, D.C., on Nov. 10. The source said Trump was regularly dismayed when he would inquire about aspects of the transition and Christie and his team would respond with “I don’t know” or “this didn’t happen yet.” When Christie did try to fill key roles, the high-level source said Trump and his top aides were not satisfied with the people the governor and his team found for the jobs. Specifically, the source said Trump and his key advisers were upset to find that Christie suggested many lobbyists for administration roles. As Trump went over lists of potential administration and transition team staffers provided by Christie and his team, the high-level source said he would inquire about their backgrounds and repeatedly found they were lobbyists. “The number of lobbyists appalled the s*** out of him,” the campaign source said of Trump. In addition to the high-level Trump source, two separate Trump campaign sources confirmed this account. The source close to Christie admitted the governor did have some lobbyists on the transition team that was doing “pre-election” work. However, they said this was “approved” by Trump’s campaign staff and that there were no lobbyists on the teams who would be working on the transition after the election. The Christie ally showed Yahoo News Powerpoint briefings that were given to pre-election transition staffers where they were informed that, after the race was over, no registered lobbyists would be allowed to work on the transition. “The pre-election team did have among it some registered lobbyists and everyone on the pre-election teams was approved by the campaign,” said the Christie source. (Photo: Dennis Van Tine/STAR MAX/IPX) The Christie source also said that, under the governor’s leadership, the transition team did everything it set out to do prior to the election. “We did what we planned to do, which was install the pre-election deliverables and hand them off to the team,” the Christie source said. They said these “deliverables” included “vetting of hundreds” of job candidates, “agency backgrounders and briefings,” “policy implementation memos,” and “transition memos” with operational instructions for what the team would do after a victory. But Trump did not have teams set up for liaison with key government agencies until more than a week after his election. This lack of official interaction has been a source of bad headlines and criticism for Trump’s nascent administration. On a press conference call Thursday morning, Republican National Committee chief strategist Sean Spicer, who has been advising Trump, said the transition team is finally beginning to roll out those “landing teams.” “Today, the landing teams are being launched,” he said. Members of the national security landing team, which is assigned to meet with Obama administration officials at the Pentagon and National Security Council, were announced on Friday. Trump’s team has said it will announce a landing team that will focus on economic issues on Monday, and that will be followed by a team dedicated to domestic affairs. The Christie ally noted that landing teams are not allowed to contact government agencies until after a winner is declared in the election. They blamed any delay in announcing the teams on the campaign having not planned for a win. The Christie ally further suggested any Trump campaign staffer blaming the governor for delays in the transition was simply “trying to make themselves look good” after they got the postelection phase off to a slow start. According to the high-level Trump campaign source, the president-elect made the decision to demote Christie to vice chair and install Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Nov. 11. The move was announced on the same day. And the high level source said Trump is confident in Pence’s ability to get the transition back on track, particularly given his experience as a congressman who spent over a decade on Capitol Hill. “Pence is an executor that knows Washington and knows how to get things done,” the source said. Last Tuesday, four days after Christie’s demotion was announced, two officials who had been working on national security issues for the transition team, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., and lobbyist Matthew Freedman, were fired. Rogers declined to comment on whether Trump was unhappy with the transition team’s initial efforts. “I have no comment on that,” Rogers said. “I really don’t know anything about that.” Freedman also declined to discuss his work on the transition team. “I’m not prepared to speak with you, but thanks for calling,” said Freedman. However, two of the sources close to Christie noted some staffers brought on to the transition team by the governor still remain in their roles. As an example, the Christie ally cited Bill Haggerty, who is helping Trump identify potential Cabinet appointments. “Anybody saying Trump was expressing dissatisfaction with the governor is ridiculous, particularly on the appointment stuff,” the Christie ally said. “Bill Hagerty, who did the presidential appointments stuff for Romney, did it for us and is still there doing all the same work.” News of the firing of Rogers and Freedman was immediately followed by a slew of reports that the action was part of a “purge” of aides loyal to Christie that was orchestrated by Kushner because of a longstanding grudge. (In 2004, Christie prosecuted Kushner’s father for tax evasion, illegal campaign contributions, and witness tampering.) However, the high-level campaign source who talked to Yahoo News suggested the rumors about Kushner engaging in a “vendetta” against Christie were “completely false.” “The idea that, at this kind of time, that Jared would do something to try to settle personal scores above what was in Mr. Trump’s best interest is somewhat ridiculous,” the high-level source said. “Trump just wouldn’t put up with that, and Jared knows that 100 percent.” The source also indicated that Kushner and Christie worked well together prior to the campaign. Kushner runs his family’s real estate company, which has multiple large projects in New Jersey. The two other campaign sources also said Christie’s demotion did not come at Kushner’s behest. “Jared and Gov. Christie have had a fine working relationship for several years,” the high-level source said. This was the one point where the Trump campaign source and Christie’s ally agreed. Trump’s campaign was characterized by infighting and by aides whose stock rose and fell rapidly. Christie’s demotion is likely a result of that chaotic process. And although Christie has been kept on as a vice chairman of the transition team, it remains unclear whether he’ll get a role in the administration. Despite Trump’s dissatisfaction with Christie’s initial leadership of the transition process, the governor had a private meeting with the president-elect on Sunday at Trump’s golf course in Bedminster, N.J. According to press pool reports, reporters assembled outside of the meeting asked Trump if Christie would have a place in his administration. “He’s a very talented man,” said Trump of Christie. The president-elect also called Christie “smart” and “tough.” He punched the air with his fist to emphasize this last point. Following the meeting, Christie told the reporters that the meeting went “great.” Trump offered a similar assessment of the discussion. “Very well,” Trump said. “Very good.” Close 3468 reactions Join the conversation on the Yahoo App. Install

Jonathan may contest 2019 elections – Dele Momodu

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, may seek reelection in Nigeria’s 2019 presidential election, the publisher of Ovation Magazine, Mr. Dele Momodu, has said. Jonathan, who ruled Africa’s most populous nation from 2011 to 2015, lost his bid for reelection in last year’s presidential polls to President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress. Since leaving office Jonathan’s profile internationally has risen, and Mr. Momodu says the Peoples Democratic Party chieftain may stage a comeback bid in 2019. In an article titled, “The second coming of Goodluck Jonathan”, Mr. Momodu explained that the victory of US President-elect Donald trump “should bring us back to our senses”. He wrote, “I have been reading about the rising profile of our former President, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and wish to state without equivocation that no one should rule him out of the 2019 presidential race. I first hinted this possibility about two months ago and wish to reiterate that Nigerians should prepare for the shock that awaits us. The story of Donald Trump should bring us back to our senses. Nothing is impossible. The second coming of Goodluck Jonathan may be so far-fetched or even belong in those categories of impossibilities but I wish to plead with our government and my fellow citizens not to rule it out. As one of those who made our modest and humble contributions to the coming of this Buhari government, I’m pleading with trepidation. Mr. Momodu blamed the ex-president’s rising profile on the failure of the government to maintain “the economy it met”. He said, “Nigerians would have been ready to enter fire with Buhari. But there are just too many unresolved problems and challenges. The excuses that Jonathan and company left this peculiar mess behind has refused to fly.” The business magnate said that the expectation of Nigerians who voted massively for the ‘change’ preached by the APC during its campaign are “confronted with the reality of an economic recession they never planned for; a situation they did not experience under the Jonathan administration and under previous governments”. He said, “The BBC reported on Friday how Jonathan caused a stir in Sokoto State during his visit to the state to pay his respects to Ibrahim Dasuki, the late former Sultan of Sokoto. According to the report, Jonathan was received by a large crowd of admirers, some holding banners bearing the words “Come Back Baba Jonathan”. “The same voices that chanted “Sai Baba” and “Jonathan Must Go” are now fiddling with the tunes of the possibility of a Jonathan to stage a comeback. Here lies the irony of political triumph and the paradox of high expectations. “The euphoria and momentum that saw the exit of Jonathan and the emergence of the Buhari change administration has since begun to wane following the inability of the new government to hit the ground running with the tenacity of a government in a hurry! “There are many who believe that the poor management of the ensuing economic recession didn’t help matters. Suddenly, Nigerians who had high hopes and voted massively for change are now caught in a limbo between confusion and uncertainty.”

Those plotting to disintegrate Nigeria won’t succeed— DOGARA

says ‘Northern Muslims backed my emergence’as speaker’ By Emman Ovuakporie & Johnbosco Agbakwuru ABUJA—Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said those plotting and fighting for the dismemberment of Nigeria were bound to fail, noting God didn’t make a mistake in bringing the various ethnic groups together in one country.Dogara spoke during a reception organised by Northern Nigeria Christian Politicians to honour him and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, in Abuja weekend. The speaker, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media & Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, advised those plotting the disintegration of the Nigerian state to have a rethink because their mission was bound to fail. He said: “ For some of us who think Nigeria was a mistake, or that the North, having aggregated so many ethnic groups, and then two dominant force is a mistake, I want to advice us to do a rethink. “ “The one who put together Nigeria and the North is God and He has the mandate. And anybody who is fighting for the disintegration of this country will not succeed because I believe that God has a plan for Nigeria and l believe God has a plan for northern Nigeria. “Until God is done with his plan, the north will remain as it is and Nigeria will remain as it is. If anyone can upturn that, it means he is greater than God.” Northern Muslims supported me Dogara also urged northern Christians to embrace their Muslim counterparts because of the former’s extension of olive branch as exemplified by the prominent role played by Muslim leaders in his emergence as speaker and the appointment of Babachir David Lawal as the SGF by President Muhammadu Buhari. He informed the gathering that there was no way he would have emerged speaker, if northern Muslims did not support and vote for him. Dogara said his emergence as speaker and the appointment of Mr. Lawal as SGF were pointers to the new thinking and resolve to return to the good legacies of Sardauna of Sokoto, the late Premier of northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, who elevated prominent northern Christians to top government positions which helped in uniting the various peoples of the region. “Now, talking about interfaith in the North, what we are celebrating today, you know who the President is, and we know what he has done for our brother (Babachir Lawal) . In my own case, the emergence we are celebrating today, I want to thank God for Senator Zwingina who made this very wonderful remark that there are wonderful Muslims. “There are those who sincerely believe that the Christian community in the North deserve more among our Muslim brothers and I can tell you this, without that thinking, there is no way that I would have been standing here as the speaker of the House of Representatives. “There are those who said look, time has come for the North to go back to those days of Sardauna where those who call themselves, or are referred to as the core North will deliberately fashion out ways of compensating their brothers, Christians, in the North. “It may interest you to know that that school of thought, obviously, I won’t mention everyone, but I will mention a few. We got serious support from the present governor of Sokoto State, from the governor of Zamfara State, from people like Senator Wammako, Senator Ahmed Yerima, from people like Hon. Kawu Sumaila who, really, in spite of the fact that they had invested so much capital in building political networks and connections, decided to go against this networks to ensure that this position is given to a Christian from the North. “It may interest you to know that in Sokoto State, we lost only two votes. If all the members only from Sokoto State had decided to vote for my opponent, there is no way we would have won that election. And in Zamfara, we lost one vote. “What does that speak to us? That means there is an invitation to us as Christians to go back to our old ways. What ways? When we used to work together, we used to live together and it is only through that way that we can live in peace, which is a key ingredient for development. “ The speaker expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing “one of our own as Secretary to Government of the Federation. ‘’Those who know the inner workings of government would know that that position combines many ministers together. And for us as a community, at least in my own lifetime, I don’t know what the elders have seen, I can say this is the first time a northern Christian is holding that position. “Without peace, we cannot even practice our religion. And as long as we don’t enjoy peace in our region, there is no way we will experience development because even if we are developed, lack of peace will destroy it. Syria is a case in point. So that is the challenge before us. As they open their arms to embrace us, we should also open our arms to embrace them so that we can write a new political history.”

Has US passed baton of world leadership to Germany?

In this once divided city, Barack Obama, the outgoing President of a now divided USA, came bearing a baton, a torch of global international leadership to pass on to Chancellor Angela Merkel. He lavished praise on his "closest ally" in office. Frau Merkel almost appeared to tear up as he recounted her personal history being the story of Germany's success. President Obama practically said he would vote for her, if he could. How history's wheel turns. In his own analysis, it does not move in a straight line, it zigzags. Donald Trump's election, Brexit, the rise of some populist movements; all have been woven together by digitisation, and the easy percolation of false simple answers to complex truths, he says. :: Japan PM Shinzo Abe first foreign leader to meet Donald Trump Video: Obama: Trump must 'stand up' to Russia Frau Merkel responded with the same analysis. She will find it easier to face off the rise of populist parties, due to the German electoral system. But her lament for the direction of the world was not hidden. She, alone in the G7 industrialised nations, made her welcome to Mr Trump, conditional on respect for human values. Berlin frets at the sight of Nigel Farage by Mr Trump's side, of his advisers offering support to the Le Pen family. Diplomatic circles here in Berlin question the new White House's commitment to internationalism, NATO, stopping Vladimir Putin, and the transatlantic alliance. Mr Obama tried unconvincingly to square his pre-election disdain for the notion of a President Trump with the fact that it is now happening. His "cautious optimism" was not about Mr Trump per se, but about the fact that if he did not perform in a job "demanding seriousness" he "won't be there very long". "The President-elect is going to see fairly quickly that the demands of being President cannot be treated casually," he said: a classic lawyer's way of appearing to conform to conventions, while not changing his view of Mr Trump even slightly. :: French PM: Europe is at risk of breaking apart Video: Obama's advice on Donald Trump's temperament Angela Merkel stood next to him, and the overall impression I got was total agreement - and agreement that Obama should carry on doing it. He can't. For starters, there is now open talk that a Trump White House means that Germany will have to look after its own defence and security - so Germany as a military power to match the French and the UK. But President Obama is resting much more on Merkel's shoulders. He "hopes" the President-elect "stands up" to Russia and doesn't take the dealmaker "realpolitik" position at the expense of "smaller countries". And the following things can't be taken for granted: the transatlantic relationship, free speech, civil liberties, an independent judiciary, the US system of Government and "our way of life". Mr Obama clearly thinks Mr Trump is the cause of this uncertainty. He may be expecting far too much of Frau Merkel. This is a Germany that struggled with the burdens of Eurozone leadership, prolonging the man-made crisis for years of human misery. German history means that Berlin is a reluctant imperium even in its own backyard. It operates globally through the European Union. Berlin is in protective, not leadership mode. And the next move it awaits is who Donald Trump chooses as Secretary of State. A US President in Berlin tends to direct history - Barack Obama leaves Europe uncertain where the world is heading

Obama's last trip: Addressing a divided Europe

Obama's last trip: Addressing a divided Europe By Atika Shubert, CNN Updated 1321 GMT (2121 HKT) November 16, 2016 Obama, Trump: The view from Greece 01:00 Story highlights President Obama to meet leaders of Italy, France, Germany and the UK on Friday Obama will meet one-on-one with Merke The white pillars of the Parthenon, which sits at the top of the Acropolis, still stand strong 2,500 years on - a symbolic testament to the enduring idea of a government by and for the people. In the words of the Athenian general Pericles, "a government in the hands of the many, not the few." This time, President Obama comes to Europe as the defeated champion of two causes lost to democratic votes: opposition both to the election of Donald Trump as President and "Brexit," the British vote to leave the European Union. For both the US and the EU, these are uncharted waters: how will President-elect Trump -- the only candidate in US history to have won without any experience in government, the law or the military -- deal with Europe, but especially the European Union? Perhaps nothing spoke to EU fears more clearly than the photograph tweeted by Brexit champion and leader of the UK's anti-EU UK Independence Party (UKIP) Nigel Farage, grinning inside a golden Trump Tower elevator, getting a thumbs up from the President-elect himself.

Brizzi admitted being 'inspired' by US hit show Breaking Bad

As the gruesome details were read to the court, Brizzi broke down in tears, crying out "I'm sorry, I'm sorry". Crispin Aylett QC, prosecuting, warned jurors they needed "broad minds and strong stomachs" to try the case. The callous murderer, of Southwark, south London, was arrested on April 7 after neighbours complained of foul smells coming from his flat. Cops arrived at his flat, which had a strong stench of "gone off meat", to find him wearing pink Y-fronts and aviator sunglasses, which a neighbour described as similar to those worn by Tom Cruise in Top Gun. In the bath tub there were "globules" of flesh floating in acid, while buckets full of human remains lay on the floor. Officers found a hand and a spine in a bin bag. The satanic bible was later discovered on his computer, along with the 'bible of cock'. PC Semple, who was originally from Inverness in Scotland and lived in Greenhithe, Kent, was reported missing by his partner, Gary Meeks, after he failed to return home from work. Although he was in a relationship, PC Semple was "promiscuous" and regularly used Grindr to meet strangers for "extreme" sex. Brizzi's tastes were "similarly extreme". Despite supposedly being on duty, PC Semple visited Brizzi at his flat mid-afternoon, and over the next few hours, the pair used Grindr to invite others round for a drug-fuelled orgy. The satanist then strangled the cop. Evil Brizzi told police Satan "told him to kill PC Semple". He also told officers graphic details about his sex life, including how he had "tied a man up and treated him like a dog, making the man go into a cage". The former web debeloper will be sentenced on December 9. Stefano Brizzi PA PROBE: Neighbours in Southwark, south London, reported 'a bad smell' coming from Brizzi's flat

Cannibal cop monster guilty of killing policeman after drug-fuelled sex party

AN EVIL satanist who choked a gay cop to death during a drug-fuelled sex session then chopped up and dissolved the body in acid has been convicted of murderStefano Brizzi killed PC Gordon Semple, 59, after they met through the gay dating app Grindr for drug-fuelled "hot dirty sleazy" sex on April 1. The 50-year-old cooked and eaten parts of the body, with PC Semple's DNA found on chopsticks, in a pot and in the oven. Brizzi, a former web developer for the bank Morgan Stanley, denied killing him, and claimed PC Semple had accidentally died in a "state of erotic bliss" when his lead slipped, and he heard a snap. But prosecutors argued he had been agitated after an earlier Grindr hook-up fell through, and that Brizzi did not like PC Semple as he claimed he was fat and "just sat on my bed masturbating". At the Old Bailey today, the Italian national was convicted of murder and cleared of an alternative count of manslaughter.

Kebbi Surpasses One Million Tonnes Of Rice

The importance of Agriculture to the economy cannot be quantified more especially in the present economic crunch where all other sources of revenue have dwindled. Besides, agriculture is the only dependable activity that could guarantee food security apart from its economic benefits, hence, the federal government saw the need to diversify the economy with much priority to agriculture. Nigeria is blessed with vast arable land that can sustain commercial agriculture for both cash crops and food crops. Oil revenue in the global market has continued to shrink and agriculture becomes the alternative economic base that could replace dependency on oil. The Federal Government, therefore, did not hesitate to go back to agric which used to be the mainstay of the economy prior to the discovery of oil. “Go back to the land and develop agriculture because the era of depending on oil is over’’ that was the message of President Muhammadu Buhari to farmers when he lunched the dry season and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Anchor Rice Borrowers Programme in Birnin Kebbi on the 17th of November 2015. It could also be recalled that the President has made no secret of his determination to improve the base of Nigeria’s economy by reviving agriculture and opening the mines among other measures. This month’s clock one year of the CBN Anchor Rice Borrowers Programme in Kebbi state; the program aims to boost rice and wheat production in Nigeria by providing loans to farmers. Thousands of farmers have seized the opportunity created by the Central Bank Anchor Borrowers Programme to expand rice output it has been celebration galore for rice farmers in the state as they claimed to have recorded high bumper harvest in comparison with previous years. The kebbi state Governor , Chairman National Task Force on Rice and wheat Atiku Bagudu and his Deputy Samaila Yombe along with Chairman of the state’s Rice Farmers’ Association, Alhaji Sahabi Augie conveyed journalists round to see for themselves place like Augie, Kalgo, Dandi, Bunza, suru, wasagu and Birnin kebbi local government areas where farmers where seen displaying and celebrating their bumper harvest . Interestingly, Kebbi state has surpassed the one million tonnes of rice targeted for harvest in the year with over eight hundred and fifty tonnes. The chairman rice farmers Association Sahabi Augie said the yield increase was due to improved seedlings and the assistance rendered to farmers through the Anchor Borrowers Programme of the CBN with over 500,000 hectares of cultivated land across ten local government areas of the state. He explained that the variety of rice cultivated in kebbi include Nerica7 and 84 as well as faro 44,52, and 61 with farming occurring thrice through the dry, wet, dry season within a year with Rima and sokoto river serving the dry season irrigation farming

How Nigeria can be great again, by Maitama Sule, Ofonagoro, others

By Michael Eboh Abuja—Elder statesmen, religious leaders and economists, yesterday, called for the re-adoption of the 1960 constitution, and asked that the country returned to agreements reached during the independence, if Nigeria must attain greatness, surmount its political, economic and social crisis and also achieve true national integration. Maitama Sule These were the views of Alhaji Maitama Sule, Chief Walter Ofonagoro, Bashorun Seinde Arogbofa, Mrs. Sarah Jubril and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah at the 2016 Annual General Meeting/Conference of Nigerian Institute for Public Relations, NIPR, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, chapter in Abuja. Specifically, elder statesman,  Sule lamented that the norms and values inherited from the nation’s founding fathers had been thrown overboard. He explained that Nigerians used to have leaders who had the interest of the country at heart, not party or selfish interest, adding that before independence, Nigeria was not immuned to crisis but that because of the quality of the country’s leaders then, the crises were resolved amicably. He said: “This was not the Nigeria we knew; things have fallen apart and we need to reverse that. We do not have leaders that we used to have, where, despite all the challenges the country faced then, it was able to overcome.” He expressed optimism that Nigeria would be truly united one day, adding that it would succeed and occupy the country’s pride of place in the comity of nations, if there are good leaders. Also speaking, Bishop Kukah said efforts should be made towards building a united, peaceful and just country, with everybody seen to be surrendering to the constitution of the country. Speaking in the same vein, Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated that keeping Nigeria one was a task for all by ensuring that all groups shared a common vision for the collective development of the country. Mohammed, who was represented by the Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, said, “Emphasising state of origin in government applications for resource allocations must give way to state of residence; Federal, states and local governments should stop patronising any religion or get involved in religious activities. In his own submission, Ofonagoro lamented the precarious economic situation the country was in today, noting that ”the citizens of the country should be ashamed of themselves, because we could do much better than what we see today.” “The erection of churches and mosques in offices should be stopped. Religion is a personal matter and our 1999 constitution says clearly that we are a secular nation. He bemoaned the fact that despite the end of the Nigerian civil war, the country has been saddled with 50 years of military rule, as according to him, the officers who took power in 1966, and their loyal aides, have taken turns to rule Nigeria, with some ruling twice.
