It will be recalled that speculation had been rife that the President who is on a medical vacation in London had died.

How Silicon Valley reacted to the Trump inauguration

America has a new a president in DoContiSilicon Valley’s reaction to the inauguration of the country’s 45th president was unsurprisingly swift. Thoughts on social media, particularly Twitter (TWTR), were far from positive, with members of the tech community expressing disdain for Trump overall, as well as displeasure with specific moments from the inauguration. Michael Solana, vice president at Founders Fund, the San Francisco-based venture capital firm co-founded by billionaire investor and Trump transition team member Peter Thiel, sent out a Tweet mocking Trump’s negative tone about the state of the nation. Meanwhile, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s former speechwriter, Dex Torricke-Barton, seemed less than optimistic that Trump would improve the state of the country. Barton made something of a splash in the tech industry last November when he quit his job as head of communications at Elon Musk’s SpaceX to focus on grassroots work to combat the rise of Trump. For his part, Sa…

‘Map updates could have averted bombing error’

The accidental bombing of an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Rann, Borno State by the Nigerian Air Force last Tuesday could have been averted, if the Federal Government consistently updates the country’s map. In a press statement issued in Lagos at the weekend, President of the Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (NIS), Akin Oyegbola, said the Federal Government as a matter of urgency needs to earmark enough funds for survey and mapping in the budget so as to check future reoccurrence. “If the Information was true, it is safe to say that the map used for the mission could have been better updated”. He explained that, “The present digital method of processing, managing, storing and presenting geo-spatial information would have made possible mapping of the IDP Camps, as they were being sited. If the IDP Camps have been mapped, the position of one of them would not have been mistaken for that of Boko Haram”.

Shiites accuses President Buhari of dictatorship tendencies

Calls For El-Zakzaky, Wife’s Release After 45-Day Ultimatum By Court Members of the Islamic Movement Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as Shiites, yesterday, called for the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife from detention in line with the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja. Besides, the group reacted to claims by government, necessitating El-Zakzaky’s continuous detention in the custody of the Directorate of State Security (DSS), while calling on President Buhari to respect rule of law and fundamental rights of Nigerians, as directed by the court. Spokesman of the Shiites, Mallam Ibrahim Musa, faulted claims by the Presidency, as reported in the media, “that the Presidency knew next to nothing about the illegal detention of our leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife. “The report has it that the government tendered a lame excuse as to why it refused to obey an order of the Federal high court to release Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife, ci…

Again, Atiku backs devolution of power

Sultan Advises Against Inciting Comments Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has again canvassed the need for devolution of powers to the 36 component states of the federation. Atiku, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), who was the chief presenter at the launch of the book, “Gwandu Emirate: The Domain of Abdullahi Fodio, since 1805,” yesterday in Birnin Kebbi, wondered why a section of Nigerians are uncomfortable with the devolution of power, which was practiced in the Sokoto Caliphate in the 19th Century. He maintained that the measure, which would entail the Federal Government devolving some of its powers domiciled in the Exclusive Legislative List in the constitution, would engender good governance and development in the polity. Describing the event as significant and special in many respects, Abubakar remarked that there was much to be learnt in this regard from the way and manner Othman Dan Fodio devolved power to his younger brother, Abdullahi Fodio, who effe…

Presidency denies Buhari death rumour

President Muhammadu Buhari is well and alive, the presidency said late on Saturday after a news website published a story that the Nigerian leader has passed away in London. Metro-uk.com, which can be confused for the more recognised metro.co.uk, ascribed the source of its story to unnamed officials of the Nigerian High Commission in London and a presidential aide who claimed Buhari died of an “unknown disease”. But the presidency insisted all is well with the 74-year old Nigerian leader. “Best wishes to all who wish PMB well. As for those who carry evil rumours, may they receive grace to repent,” tweeted Femi Adesina, Buhari’s media adviser. “He is alive and well! President Buhari is not magical. He cannot be holidaying in the UK and be in Germany, dead or alive at the same time,” said another presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu.

Your Land Or Your Blood.

[5/5, 9:11 PM] ‪+234 802 948 1691‬: Your Land Or Your Blood. By Adamu Mohammed. Ever since President Muhammadu Buhari took over the mantle of leadership of this great country Nigeria, we(Hausa-Fulanis) have come under severe media attack from enemies of progress. Just because they are educated than us, they stereotype us with negativity. Just because they own and control the media, they use the media against us. But let me make something clear to you stupid fellows hating us, whether you love us or hate us, it doesn't change anything. We are who we are and we will continue to remain like that. We hate you even more and we can never love you because you are all infidels. I pity those of you who keep deluding yourselves that we can love and trust you simply because you worked against your people to our own advantage, never! I heard that the stupid Governor of Oyo State, Ajimobi said that they won't accept the proposed Grazing Bill. But my message to the filthy Yoruba pig…

Nigeria novelist was banned for speaking her mother tongue

Nigerian novelist and writer Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani recalls how she was banned from speaking her mother tongue My parents forbade my local language, Igbo, from being spoken in our home when I was a child. Unlike the majority of their contemporaries in our hometown of Umuahia in south-east Nigeria, my parents chose to speak only English to their children. They also conversed between themselves in English, even though they had each grown up speaking Igbo with their own parents and siblings. On the rare occasion my father and mother spoke Igbo with each other, it was a clear sign that they were conducting a conversation in which the children were not expected to participate. Guests in our home adjusted to the fact that we were an English-speaking household and conformed, with varying degrees of success.

President Obama can help beat fake news

In the same news conference in which Trump shamelessly invoked Nazi Germany, he described the reporting about the intelligence information as "fake news" -- the phenomenon in which phony news stories, planted for political propaganda, masquerade as real news to influence unsuspecting voters. How convenient of our President-elect, a leader in the dissemination of fake news. Trump had led the way for years in claiming that President Obama wasn't born in the United States, until Trump retracted the baseless claims during the heat of the fall election. As if that weren't enough, our President-elect attacked CNN at Wednesday's news conference, accusing it of reporting fake news. But Trump offered no proof. In fact, he never has proof to substantiate his attacks on CNN, or his other favorite media target, The New York Times. In decrying the phenomenon of fake news, Trump creates fake news to distract the nation's attention from his attacks based on ignorance or hat…

Trump intel memo controversy is nothing like Nazi Germany

Is anyone left in America whom President-elect Donald Trump has not offended? During the campaign, he made remarks that were offensive to Muslims, Mexicans and women, for starters. Now he has offended Holocaust survivors and their families by trivializing the atrocities of Nazi Germany. Our President-elect should be ashamed. Winning the Electoral College is not a license to lead without humanity.
