Okowa Assures Windstorm Disaster Victims Of Govt Assistance

By Festus Ahon ASABA—Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State
has assured victims of the windstorm disaster in
Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha South Local Government
Area of the state, of government assistance to
alleviate their sufferings. Speaking through the state Commissioner, Bureau
for Special Duties, Mr Ernest Ogwezzy, when the
state delegation visited the community to ascertain
the extent of damage caused by the windstorm,
Okowa expressed the state government’s
determination to make life more meaningful for all Deltans. The governor described the windstorm which
blew off the roofs of some residential buildings in
the community and others at St. Anthony’s
College, Ubulu-UKU, as unfortunate and
devastating.GOVERNOR Ifeanyi Okowa Sympathizing with the community and the victims
of the windstorm disaster for their losses, Okowa
prayed that such disaster should not happen
again. He told the people to stop indiscriminate felling of
trees but rather strive to plant trees to act as wind
breaks, adding that if trees were planted on the
premises of the affected buildings, the effect of the
windstorm would not have been as serious as it
was. He said that the state government through the
Ministry of Energy liaised with the Benin Electricity
Distribution Company, BEDC, to replace the cables
and electric poles damaged by the windstorm with
a view to restoring power supply to the
community. The commissioner who was accompanied on the
inspection by directors from the State Emergency
Management Agency, SEMA, including Mrs.
Gladys Peugeren, the Vice Chairman, Aniocha
South Local Government Area, Mr. Steve
Asikawili, Supervisory Councillors from Aniocha South, including the Supervisory Councillor for
Agriculture, Mr. Sunny Odogwu Nwadu, among
others, had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the
council Chairman, Chief Isaac Anwuzia, who was
represented by the Vice Chairman.
